Electricity has the power to light lamps that help us see at night and fuel heaters that keep us warm in winter, but it is important not to get in electricity’s way because it can seriously injure you. Here are a few safety tips to remember.
First, remember to never play with electrical cords, wires, switches, or plugs. When these are plugged in they have an electrical current running through them. If they break or are touched in the wrong place they may cause harm to you.
Also be careful when unplugging electrical cords, wires, switches, or plugs. Never yank the cord out of the wall, but instead carefully and securely grab the plug and gently remove it. This will keep your cords in good condition and help prevent wires from coming loose or possibly fully exposing wires.
Second, stay away from fallen power lines. Immediately call the electricity company in your local area. If the situation becomes more serious, call 911 and they will immediately send a professional on the scene to help keep it safe and secure.
Remember to never touch a fallen power line. Never touch anything or anyone in contact with a power line. You could be shocked by contact with the line or a secondary object or person.
Instruct children to immediately tell an adult if they see a fallen line. Teach them to stay far away from the area.
Third, don’t use a hairdryer or play an electrical radio or television near a bathtub or sink. All hair dryers in America are tagged with a large warning label not to use it near water for one obvious reason: mixing the two could result in electrocution and even death.
Along with this, remember to never touch anything that runs on electricity when your hands are wet. It is very likely that you will get electrocuted if this occurs.
Fourth, remember that power lines can be hidden. Before climbing or cutting a tree be sure to inspect it and see if there are any power lines. If a power line is nearby or touching, be sure to stay away from the tree until you consult an electrician.
Fifth, fly kites and model airplanes in a wide open field or park. Make sure that you are not flying them near overhead electrical wires.
Always look up before you send something up in the air, like a kite or an airplane. There are electrical wires located throughout neighborhoods and communities and they can often be overlooked.
Sixth, never climb utility poles or electrical towers. This would be an extremely dangerous pastime. Professionals who work on utility poles and electrical towers are highly trained.
They know what safety habits to maintain while working on them. If you are not professionally trained or authorized to be working with utility poles or electrical towers, than you should not be climbing or working on them.
Seventh, stay away from substations and transformers. Most substations and transformers are in green boxes. These boxes often contain strong electrical currents.
Not only is safety important when it comes to electricity but also saving electricity is something we should all be aware of.
One way that you can save electricity is by making alterations to the current uses of your biggest electricity guzzlers.
With that in mind, you’ll first want to address the big energy users in your home first. These would include appliances such as the air conditioning, heating, electric water heater, electric clothes dryer, lighting, and refrigerators.
To save electricity you can use them less or upgrade them so that they don’t use as much energy and thereby need less electricity to run. As you work to save electricity you will save money on your bills. In this economy, saving money on bills is a much needed relief.
In our world electricity is prevalent. Be careful and smart when situations arise where electricity could be harmful. In your home always try to save electricity.
